Oil Transfer Technique

These were done using the oil transfer drawing technique developed by Paul Klee in 1919. The line quality that this technique gives is nice and messy and not completely controllable.

Inking

Here I’ve used a Speedball roller to roll a layer of Prussian Blue oil paint onto a sheet of cheap thin paper. I think it was some sort of butcher paper that had a glossy side. Newsprint also works.

Drawing

I’ve flipped the inked paper over onto a 300 lb watercolor block and have drawn on the back of the inked paper. If there’s any mistakes, there’s no erasing :)

Result

Here’s the result on the watercolor block. As I drew, the lines have transfered onto the watercolor paper in a way that’s pretty messy. Some background also transfers as well. If perfection is your goal…this won’t be your medium, but if you have a printmaker’s love of nasty lines and accidents, this technique has some things to offer.

After this, I went in with watercolors.

Here’s a brief tutorial from Winsor & Newton on that method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vux_grEBhR0
